Thailand Visa Exemption Rule

The Visa Exemption Rule allows tourists from the United States to enter Thailand without a visa for a maximum period of 30 days. In order to be allowed into Thailand you must have a confirmed return ticket or an onward ticket showing that you are flying out of the country within the 30 days of entry.  You will also be required to have funds of at least 10,000 THB (about $280 USD) per person during your stay. This 30 day time limit may subsequently be extended for an additional 30 days by paying a 1,900 baht fee (around $53 USD) to a Thai Immigration Bureau office. 

If an individual wishes to remain in Thailand for more than 30 days, he/she may wish to obtain a tourist visa at the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate in the United States, prior to arriving in Thailand. The tourist visa must generally be used within 90 days from the date of issue and allows an initial stay of 60 days. After arrival in Thailand, a tourist visa may be extended at the discretion of an immigration officer once for an additional 30 days with the total period of stay no longer than 90 days.  There is a 1,900 Baht fee for the extension.

Before applying for Thailand Tourist Visa we will need to gather the following required files.  Files will need to be either is .Jpeg, .Jpg or PDF file with a limit size of 3MB.

• Photo of Biodata Page of Passport
• Headshot photo of you with a white background.  
• Travel booking confirmation. (Your flight itinerary)
• Proof of accommodation in Thailand (Hotel)
• Financial evidence. (Bank statement with sufficient funds)
• Confirmation of legal residence in a country in which you are applying. (Driver’s License)
• A copy of flight confirmation/reservation. (Your flight itinerary)
• Copy of passport pages which contain all travel records for the past 12 months
• Verify his/her current residency. (Power Bill)
• Picture of you holding the photo and information page of your passport.

After gathering the required documents, the first thing you will need to do is create an account on the Official Thailand E-Visa website.  https://www.thaievisa.go.th/

And jpeg of your headshot.

Make sure that your status says processing. Otherwise it will say awaiting payment, which you would click on the link and pay the $40 by credit card. Once approved the status will change.

Obtaining a Thailand 60-day tourist e-visa is a straightforward and positive process.. This application took me two hours to complete because I had gather all documents and had to research some of the questions to make sure I answered correctly. Turn around time generally takes about 5-14 business days. I did not have a return ticket back to the United States. On the following Monday, I received an approval email.
