In 2019, I embarked on a thrilling adventure, exploring the beauty of Thailand as a digital nomad. Little did I know that this journey would take an unexpected turn that would forever emphasize the importance of travel insurance, particularly SafetyWing’s Nomad Insurance.

A Bitter Turn of Events

One sunny day, while cautiously approaching a stop sign on a rented motorbike, my life took an unforeseen twist. The next thing I remember was getting up from the ground, disoriented and in pain. I scanned my surroundings, fearing a collision with another vehicle, but there was none. It was the treacherous gravel that had caused me to skid and take a harsh fall.

The result? A fractured thumb, bloodied hands, and a near-disaster experience. Thanks to my helmet, I walked away with my life, and my wrist was protected by my trusty watch. Driving myself 5 min to the nearest hospital, I was in shock when they asked me if I had insurance because if I needed surgery it’s gonna get very expensive.   I did not!!  Lucky I had a Thai friend that drove me 45 min to the government hospital that was more affordable.

The Road to Recovery

My ordeal was far from over. I spent a night in the hospital after hours in the emergency room. Followed by Multiple trips back to the hospital for accompanied by IV shots to prevent infection. Upon returning home, I needed to consult with a hand specialist. The verdict was a fractured thumb, and the question of surgery loomed.

Fractured Thumb

After my thumb healed, the real work began – six months of rigorous rehabilitation to regain mobility. I managed to reclaim about 75% of my thumb’s function, but it was a grueling journey that effectively put an end to my motorbike adventures.

What Does Travel Insurance Cover?

Travel insurance typically covers a range of situations and expenses related to your trip. The exact coverage can vary depending on the policy and provider, but common elements of travel insurance coverage include:

  1. Trip Cancellation or Interruption: Reimbursement for non-refundable trip expenses if you have to cancel or cut short your trip due to covered reasons such as illness, injury, or unforeseen events.
  2. Medical and Health Coverage: Coverage for medical emergencies, including doctor visits, hospital stays, prescription medications, and emergency medical evacuation.
  3. Lost or Delayed Baggage: Compensation for lost, stolen, or delayed luggage and personal belongings during your trip.
  4. Travel Delay: Reimbursement for additional expenses like accommodations, meals, and transportation if your trip is delayed for reasons beyond your control.
  5. Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation: Coverage for the cost of evacuating you to a medical facility or your home country in case of a medical emergency.
  6. Accidental Death and Dismemberment: A lump-sum payment to your beneficiaries in the event of your death or compensation for specific injuries during the trip.
  7. Coverage for Pre-Existing Conditions: Some policies may offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, provided you meet certain requirements.
  8. Coverage for Adventure Activities: Depending on the policy, it might cover activities like extreme sports or adventure excursions.
  9. Emergency Assistance Services: 24/7 access to assistance services for medical emergencies, travel-related issues, and information.
  10. Liability Coverage: Coverage for third-party injuries or property damage you may accidentally cause during your trip.

It’s essential to thoroughly read and understand the terms and conditions of your specific travel insurance policy, as coverage can vary between policies and providers. Some policies might offer additional features like cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage or coverage for rental cars. Always check the exclusions and limitations of the policy to ensure it suits your needs.
